What Is Ramadan? Significance of Holy Ramadan
Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of Islamic calendar.Performing fast in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam which is ‘Farz’ for all the Muslims.Ramadan is the holiest month for the Muslims all over the world during which they observes fast by not taking any food or water/drink from the dawn to sunset and breaks the fast by consuming foods in Iftar. This month gives the Muslims a great opportunity to serve Almighty ALLAH through extra prayer,reciting Qur’an and doing religious acts and study.In this holy month ALLAH multiplies the reward of ‘Ibadaat’. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) said: “When the month of Ramadan starts,the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of hell are closed and the devils are chained.”
So,Ramadan is the best occasion for introspection and improve oneself through the ‘Ibadaat’ of ALLAH to find the right path of living and ask for the forgiveness of previous sins.
Reason and Purpose of Celebrating Ramadan
According to the Muslim belief – ALLAH revealed the Holy Qur’an in this month,in the ‘Night of Power’ also known as Lailatu-Qadr.In surah AlBaqarah,ALLAH says, “The month of Ramadan,that in which Qur’an was sent down; a guidance for mankind,and clear signs of guidance and distinction.”(2:185)
It is one of the reasons that makes Ramadan worth celebrating and special and provides the chances of getting extraordinary blessings by satisfying ALLAH through worship.
The main intention of Ramadan is the purification of body and mind.It’s purpose is to teach and practice discipline,to live in modesty and to learn to control emotions through self restrain.During the fast,one can understand the sufferings of the poor people who do not get anything to eat or drink and that builds a sense in them to help the people in need.
Ramadan Activities :-
In Ramadan,the Muslims prevent themselves from taking any kind of food and drink during the fast.They also avoid engaging in fight,telling lies,using bad language and any kind of immoral acts.Even some of them reduces the rate of watching televisions and listening to music.Muslims pass this month by reciting Qur’an as much as they can,reading religious books and gaining knowledge about Hadith. They keep themselves busy in charitable acts and in obeying the orders of the Almighty.They pray extra in hope for the satisfaction of ALLAH.
This Holy month teaches to control greed,lust,jealousy,anger and other emotions.So that,one can control their emotions in any situation and take the right decision.They learn to control their emotions and avoid the negative emotions and embraces the positive thinking which makes the world a better place for living. Ramadan, a holy month,which is celebrated in the Muslim community worldwide is the month when they get the chance to rectify themselves and gain nearness to ALLAH. It is the month of purification.It gives lesson to be righteous and to walk in the path of rightness and humanity. In this glorious month Muslims restrain themselves from all the reason less doings and mischief and involves deeply in religious activities and practice leading a disciplined simple life.
